Hey!!...You People Should feel Honored"
2007 marked the 75th anniversary of the use of the word, "Redskins" for the professional football team from Washington, D.C. Many Native Americans across the United States feel the name and image are racist.
On Sunday, October 14, 2007, the Washington Redskins traveled to Green Bay, Wisconsin to play the Packers in a regular season football game. Before the start of the game, educators, activists, students and other people staged a protest at Lambeau Field to try and educate and show the Washington Redskins how and why the name and image are wrong. It was during the protest that Richie Plass, a Menominee, Stockbridge/Munsee Indian from northern Wisconsin walked thru the crowd and interviewed fans on their reaction to the protesters and their goal.
This recording is the, "raw", unedited result. Washington fans, sportscasters, people in the parking lot and other people in attendance were interviewed. The words you hear are true and at times unbelievable. Plass did not prod anyone or chastise any of the interviewees. He only introduced himself, told them what he was doing and asked for their comments. Hold on... this recording is quite revealing.
Plass recorded, edited and produced this CD. The educational value is unequaled. To be able to hear these comments, the humor used by Plass to get their feelings out and the total volume of the content should be heard and used by any and everyone interested in the mascot/logo issue in relation to Native Americans.
